“Tank-cycle” gives riders the ultimate in cross-country mobility

hyanide_main_485.jpg
You may not have room in your garage (or budget) for a dirt bike and a snowmobile and a four-wheeler. But what if one vehicle could take the place of all three? That’s the idea behind the Hyanide, a wild concept vehicle created by German designers Oliver Keller and Tillman Schlootz for the 2006 Michelin Challenge Design. This year’s competition showcased vehicles made especially for California’s diverse and often rugged topography.

Named for its supposed resemblance to a crouching hyena, the Hyanide is designed to run on a flexible rubber tread that spans the machine’s entire underside. So if any part of the bottom is touching the ground, the Hyanide should be able to move, no matter how deep the quagmire, no matter how rough the terrain.

Monopoly ditches cash, goes plastic

72406-monopoly.jpg
While Monopoly is the paragon of good ‘ole fashioned board game fun, the “old fashioned” part had to go. Parker Brothers is phasing out the cash-based version’s funmoney and replacing it with an “Electronic Banking” flavor that could leave Mr. Moneybags turning his pockets inside out as his stash is replaced by a magnetic strip. New kits are completely devoid of the famous multi-colored bills; instead, you’ll find phoney Visa debit cards and a calculator / reader which keeps a running tabulation of your riches — or lack thereof. A deal was struck with Visa to design the mock cards and readers, presumably after surveys showed that 70% of adults used cash less often now than they did a decade ago (no surprise there). When asked about the dramatic change, Parker said replacing cash with plastic “showed the game was moving with the times.”
The world’s gone mad..

Plug-in Prius on the way?

prius.jpg
The world’s No 2 car-maker may soon offer models that you plug into a socket… just like your vacuum cleaner

Toyota is undoubtedly one of the pioneers of hybrid vehicles, but a report by respected US journal Automotive News suggests the car-making giant is now planning to diversify into ‘plug-in’ hybrids and ethanol-capable vehicles.
The Japanese marque had earlier pooh-poohed both these technologies, but Toyota US boss Jim Press was quoted by AN as saying that they did indeed offer some potential.
‘Plug-ins’, in case you’re wondering, are hybrid vehicles that have a larger battery pack than existing models such as the Prius. This enables them to travel further on all-electric power, but the catch is that the battery needs to be regularly recharged via a conventional home power outlet.
Some industry experts say plug-in hybrids could offer twice the fuel economy of existing petrol-electric cars such as the Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid.

Toyota Australia has already found a solid niche audience with its Prius (807 sales in the first half of this year), and any variation that improves on its already parsimonious fuel usage is likely to fare better — especially as petrol prices continue to soar towards the two-dollars-a-litre mark.

Quote Of The Day. Sat. Sprite

quote-of-the-day.jpgjthm2small.gif
“They say that the recipe for Sprite is lemon and lime, but I tried to make it at home, there’s more to it than that. “Hey, you want some more homemade Sprite?” “Not until you figure out what the fuck else is in it!”

Barabus TKR takes over as world’s fastest car

1-barabus.jpg
The Bugatti Veyron may no longer be the world’s fastest car. Today — following a number of teasers and leaks — Barabus officially unveiled the TKR: a new 1005 horsepower supercar the automaker says is capable of doing zero to 98kph in 1.67 seconds. What’s more, the car reportedly has a top speed of 270 mph — nearly 20 more than the Veyron. Power comes from a 6.0 liter V8 twin-turbocharged with dual intercoolers. The car has a full carbon fibre body and chassis. Further details remain sparse, but the automaker says it will sell the car for £360,000, which should translate to around US$500,000, using typical automotive market conversion rates.

It’s worth noting that Barabus sometimes refers to the car as being able to hit 60 mph in “under 2 seconds,” rather than the stated 1.67. Even so, there is still some doubt among enthusiasts if such a figure is even possible. Nonetheless, the car is on display at the 2006 British International Motor Show, and we expect to get more details in the near future. The TKR is said to have been in development for the last 10 years. The car is to be made in Italy and the power plant is built in the United Kingdom. Worldwide volume is projected to be 300-400 cars over the estimated three-year production run.

Barabus has not responded to Joshinthecity’s requests for more detailed specifications.

(Note: we apologise for the low-resolution images — Barabus has been very slow to release press material for the car).
Personally, I call bullshit.

Music Thing: Numark all-USB DJ console

jitc-music-37.jpgnumarkeng.jpg
Not so long ago, DJing was simple. You turned up with a box of 12-inch vinyl records. The club / bar / shed / bedroom you were playing would have a pair of Technics SL1200 (or 1210 - the same but black) turntables. The DJ before you would explain how the switches worked on the mixer, you’d try to work out how to get sound in your headphones, and you were in business. Now things are different. Numark’s D² Director has one USB port on the front, and two on the back. It can play tracks from a flash drive, an iPod or a portable hard drive. The huge LCD display shows waveforms and playlists, so you can assign tracks to either channel with the assisted beat-matching that’s now common. If you can bear the shame, it’s even possible to plug a USB keyboard into the thing, so you can search for songs by name. Essentially, it’s a more professional version of Numark’s IDJ2 iPod mixing console, with the Fisher-Price styling toned down and no iPod dock. Also, unlike the IDJ2, you’ll need an external DJ mixer to crossfade between the two outputs. The suggested retail price is US$799, which is considerably less than you’ll get for a used pair of Technics decks on eBay. Numark has also released a load of other high-high-high end digital DJ gear at Summer NAMM, including the iCDX, a US$999 CD player/pod dock, while the HD Mix is a all-in-one mixer, CD player, 80GB hard drive, USB host and effects box for a slightly eye-watering US$1,699.

Quote Of The Day: Friday. M&M’s

quote-of-the-day.jpgjthm2small.gif
“I used to buy a lot of M&Ms, they’re delicious little buggers. But then I switched to aspirin.
I find that if you hand your friend two aspirin, he doesn’t look at you like you’re selfish.”
